The Albany Night Bowls tournament is currently taking place under floodlights at the Albany Bowling Club, with 32 teams taking part.

The event has grown so much that organisers have had to add an extra day for matches. Last year saw 22 teams taking part on either a Tuesday or Thursday. This year, teams have been split into either a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evening group.

Team Mawas, from Mary Waters Secondary School, are the defending champions after winning last year’s event. Mardon Bros A and Mardon Bros B finished second and third respectively last year, but have combined to form one team for this year’s competition.

This year’s final of the tournament is scheduled for 30 October. The Tuesday’s group is made up of 12 teams, SAP, Bowling Thunder, Vino’s, Pennypinchers, Kenrich, On Bended Knees, Ministery of Just Us, Ink Spot, Makana Brick A, AN White, Aloe Ferox and Pick n Pay.

Wednesday’s six teams are DNA, Makana Brick B, Orange Rangers, Dup Meyer Builders, Oak Ridge Transport and Mawas.

There are 12 groups playing on a Thursday – Angles Tea Garden, Grahamstown Electrical, Davies Plumbers, Standard Bank, BadBoys, Albany Sport Rollers, Why Not, D Generation X, Makana Brick C, First City B, Mardon Bros and the Library for the Blind.

Each evening’s games start at 6.30pm and there are braai packs on sale each night for players and spectators. Tickets for the steak evening on the day of the final are also on sale.
