The development cricket side is a project run by the Rhodes University Cricket Club where they have identified a number of players from various township schools in Grahamstown.

The Rhodes club members are working with about 12 players whom they plan to groom over the next few years and hopefully discover the next Makaya Ntini.

Siqamo Laphu, who was the development officer when the initiative began and who is the current vice chairman of the club, said that although the development side lost by a large margin, the team learnt a lot and are eager to get in more practice before their next game.

The development team won the toss and sent St Andrew’s in to bat. St Andrew’s posted an impressive 275 for the loss of five wickets.

Clinton Abrahams was the best of the development bowlers, taking three wickets, while Devron Gysman took one. The development side let a few chances go as they dropped a number of possible catches.

Laphu said the development side struggled in the batting, as many of the members tried the hook shot, which Laphu said is common with street cricket, adding that the Rhodes cricket club have been teaching the players to hit straight shots.

The development side only managed 40 runs all out, but Laphu said the team learnt a lot and will be able to work on their mistakes at training sessions during the week. Laphu is hoping to set up another match for the development side shortly.
