The Rhodes University Athletics Club Charity Street Mile took place along High Street on Sunday, with a smaller field that usual, due to the cold weather conditions.

The Charity Street Mile was started in 2005 as an annual event to engage with the community and raise money for charity. A floating trophy was constructed prior to the inaugural event, and included in the trophy is sand from the track in England where Sir Roger Bannister become the first man to run a sub four minute mile. The sand was collected by former Head of Rhodes Sport Pete Andrew while on tour many years ago, and was presented to the Athletics Club by him.

The club managed to raise about R1 500 for Cansa, as well as some donations of dog food for the SPCA. “The club plans to continue with the event in the future, as it is now entrenched on our activity list for each year,” said Mike Irwin, Rhodes Athletics Club president. “The Rhodes University Athletics Club would like to thank all of the business who donated prizes for the event, as well as all of those who took part in the event,” he added. The overall race winner of the floating trophy was provincial runner Terri-Lynn Penney who won in a time of 5 minutes and 29 seconds.
