The Quilters of Grahamstown (QUOGs) will show off their work at Johan Carinus Art School in Beaufort Street this weekend. The feast of fabric creations range from an intricately hand stitched king size Baltimore quilt to three dimensional fabric artworks with a strong ecological message.

Quilts and fabric art created by 16 Grahamstown women will be exhibited. Much of the work has come out of QUOG workshops given by members of the group and by Rosalie Dace, the Durban based doyenne of South African quilting, and Pam Stallebrass, printmaker and author of books on printmaking.

Apart from traditional and contemporary quilts, the exhibition will include fine embroidery work, handmade shoes, hand dyed indigo fabrics, and designer knitted blankets. The exhibits will be arranged by category. One of these is the striptease challenge, met by most of the members of the group with great aplomb. Another exhibit will include the varied works that resulted from Dace’s Paul Klee workshop.

A quilt by Elisma Hallier is being raffled in aid of Kuyasa School. Another quilt, entitled Lollipop, will be auctioned off during the exhibition to raise funds for Somerset Place.

Quilts and fabric goods will be on sale. The exhibition is open from 9am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday and includes hourly sewing demonstrations, starting at 9.30.
