Last Saturday, Swallows beat Rhodes Shrews by five runs in a cliff hanger played at Albany Club’s cricket field.

Swallows batted first and only mustered 152 all out. Kurt Lootz and Valentino Fillis, was the only batsmen to trouble the bowlers by chipping in with 48 and 21 runs respectively. Shane Messam was the destroyer in chief for the Shrews with 5/24 in 10 overs.

Carl van Niekerk also bowled outstandingly with the amazing figures of 4/4 in only 3 overs. Needing only three runs per over in 50 overs, Rhodes Shrews went about the run chase very slowly and with the intent of letting Swallows bowl out the 50 overs. This proved to be a big mistake as the Central Albany champs bowled with venom according to an astute plan. Swallows knocked out Rhodes Shrews in the 48th over for 147 all out, showing a lot of character, determination and fight.

This Saturday, Swallows came up against Southwell and after another blistering start by openers Kurt Lootz and Edmund Jamieson, wickets tumbled at regular intervals and Swallows again posted a low total of 144 all out. Luvane Daniels and Elgin Kohl made 22 and 19 runs respectively. Destroyers in chief for Southwell was Willei with 4/34 in 10 and Nicky with 3/45 in 10 overs. Southwell never got going as Valentino Fills and Shaun Fobe taunted them with some well paced bowling.

Fobe unfortunately didn’t get any wickets, but the day belonged to Fillis as he raked in a fiver to end on 5/26 in 10 overs, ably supported by Edmund Jamieson who took 4 for 17 in 5. Swallows were very vocal and energetic in the field and proved that they can hunt in a pack and defend low scores especially in this bonus point win in their defence of their Central Albany 2nd league title. This coming weekend sees Swallows hosting Station Hill from Port Alfred at Albany B field. The games will start at 10am.
