The St Andrew’s College U15A water polo team travelled to Cape Town last week to take part in the Ian Melliar U15 Tournament hosted by Wynberg Boys High School and featuring 20 of the top sides in the country.

St Andrew’s started the tournament on Thursday evening with a comfortable 7 – 1 win against St Albans but on Friday morning they lost to St Stithians 4 – 7. They bounced back later in the day to beat Rondebosch 6 – 4 and then the hosts Wynberg 3 – 2 on Saturday morning to qualify for the quarter finals.

They started the quarter final against Grey College on the backfoot and despite a good fight back they lost the game 8 – 11. In their first play-off game they beat St Stithians 8 – 5 after extra time, and then beat St Peters 4 – 1 to finish the tournament in fifth place. An excellent result in a highly competitive tournament.

Stuart Stopforth scored 17 goals in the tournament and after the final he was selected as part of the prestigious tournament side – a remarkable achievement, especially considering he plays a year above his age group.
