Music, screams and vuvuzelas were the soundtrack of of the day at Miki Yili Stadium on Saturday.

This was when Grahamstown hosted the Eastern Province (EP), provincial rugby games where the U19 and U21 EP teams played against the Griquas U19s and U21s.

The EP U19s did not disappoint the crowd when they gave it their all. Wade Lotter scored the first try. Raynardt Mulke of the Griquas put a mark on the board when he scored a penalty, which was the only point they scored for the match. Lotter scored another making the EP side lead again and Masixole Banda converted the try. Mendley Sauls scored a penalty and the overall score was 15-3 to EP.

The tables turned when the EP U21 had their chance to play. They did not match their younger siblings as they lost 29-18 to the Griquas. The standards were raised when Potts Marchell scored the first try followed by Divan van Esterhuizen, Leon Pretorius and HP Swart. All three conversions were taken by Kevin Platjie. EP’s Morne van Rensburg scored two penalties while Iyan Kapara scored the first try. Oscar Mazaka took the second try and it was converted by Rian Bayman. The overall games were breathtaking with a great show of skill and talent. The weather was smiling on them as it only started raining towards the end of the last match.
