Celebrating the gleaming gems of local sport, the annual Sports Personality awards at Rhodes University took place at the Sports Administration building on Friday, 19 September.

The top fifteen Rhodes sports personality finalists for 2009 were nominated by individuals and then shortlisted by the committee members.

Thereafter, the nominees are put through an interrogation session and results are formalised through a point system.

The nominees were congratulated by the special guest of honour, Renee Naylor, a South African Springbok physiotherapist.

It was her first time in Grahamstown, and she said the personality awards are a great idea. Of the woman nominees, the second runner up was Rosanne Gilbert, who competes in archery followed by the first runner up, Samantha Lewis who is a hockey player.

The overall winner from the womens section was awarded to Tessa Polous. The second runner up in the mens category was awarded to Wesley Wells for rugby, followed by the first runner up, Tyron Theessen.

The winner of the male personality award for 2009 was awarded to James Dylan of Rhodes rowing. The winners proved to be actively involved in clubs, respected and admired by all, and always willing to help. Their enthusiasm for sport is invaluable.
