The four-membered team from Johannesburg is crossing the country by bicycle on a mission to raise as much funds as possible to provide bibles and bicycles for missionaries in Africa.
The teams stopped in Grahamstown on Monday before making their way to King William’s Town.The energetic team is aiming to travel 5 212km across six provinces, visiting 54 towns in 40 days.
Despite the contrasting weather conditions and varying state of the the road, the cyclists believe that their mission is for good purpose, so they are riding keeping their heads high.
Driving alongside the team is Christina Lanjeira, one of the cyclists’ wives, in the mobile home they will be all staying in for the duration of the trip.
Team leader Wendell Bole, who is a Springbok cyclist and world champion medallist, owns a bicycle shop called the Cycle Hub in Johannesburg. Backed by his fellow Christians, it was his idea to embark on a cycling trip to help other Christians in need.
He says that "there’s always a great need for bibles" as there are many people who can’t afford to buy a bible due to poverty.
While in Grahamstown, the team was welcomed by Pastor Strauss de Jager of the NG Church. He said although he didn’t spend much time with the crew, they had an opportunity to meet with the NG confirmation group.
Throughout their journey, the team have been visiting schools in various towns where they are taking part in worship sessions and distributing school books and supplies donated by Rotary South Africa.
They need 200 bicycles for the missionaries (which comes to a total cost of R200 000) and 130 000 bibles at the cost of R3 700.
According to Boles, the bicycles will supply missionaries in Africa with a mode of transport to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ.
