The Rhodes tennis league championship will be kicking off this weekend with fixtures all of Saturday and Sunday.

The championship will feature singles, doubles and mixed matches which will continue throughout next week with the finals the week after that.

This will conclude the Rhodes internal league and determine which players will continue onto the SASU championship which will be held later in the year.

It will take place in Grahamstown for the first time. The Rhodes tennis chairperson, Shelli Barnes-Webb, believes that the championship will be a success and commented that this year has been a good one for the Rhodes tennis league.

“We’ve struggled with numbers in years before but we’ve had great interest this time around.” Barnes-Webb also mentioned that the year has been “quite a build up” for the championships with tours to Stellenbosch and Cape Town; as well as one player, Sisanda Bacela, who has qualified for the Eastern Province league, preparing for the provincials later in the month. The internal league championship will be held at the Rhodes tennis courts and will commence at 9am on Saturday.
