After the extraordinary support from Grahamstown audiences, Juan, Mariel and Friends, present their third Chamber Music Concert Series in three concerts at the Drill Hall of St Andrew’s College on September 24, October 9, and October 22 at 7:30pm.

A string ensemble will be featured with a mostly Baroque programme and oboe and recorder concertos performed by oboist Hilary Paterson and recorder player Jessica Smith.

Other works to be featured are Mozart and Stephenson Oboe Quartets. A highlight will be the Chopin Concerto No 2 arranged for piano and string quintet at the final concert.

Guest musicians will be local musicians as well as two outstanding cellists from Cape Town, Marian Lewin and Barbara Kennedy.

The series aims to present the glorious works of the chamber music literature to enrich the cultural life in Grahamstown, to encourage interaction between musicians in and outside Grahamstown, and to expand audiences.

Don’t miss their opening concert on Thursday, September 24, where two of the greatest chamber music works will be performed: the Schubert E-flat major Piano Trio alongside the Brahms Piano Quartet in C minor.

Guest cellist, Marian Lewin, is one of South Africa’s most beloved cellists. She will also be giving a masterclass on September 25 at 10.30am at the DSG Music School, a learning opportunity for both scholars and music enthusiasts.

Mariel Ilusorio and Juan Munoz have been busy uplifting the musical development in Grahamstown since their arrival five years ago.

“We wanted to share something very close to our heart and it was also something that was missing in Grahamstown.

Luckily, we have gotten support from different parts of the community,” explains Munoz. “This chamber music series is not only for the music lovers.

We are trying to create new audiences by bringing in people from different corners of society to have a glimpse of what we find is one of the best things in life,” added Ilusorio.

Tickets are R50 at the door or R120 for the series. The masterclass is free. For pre-bookings and more information, please contact Juan Munoz at the Rhodes Music Department.
