Cricket in the Eastern Province received a major boost with the announcement of a multi-million rand sponsorship recently.

Axxess DSL has announced their purchase of st George’s Stadium, securing the naming rights and support for amateur cricket in the Eastern Province.

The stadium, which will from now on be known as Axxess DSL St Georges, is the oldest test venue in South Africa, the seventh oldest in the world and has played host to many international matches since its inception in 1889.

The R9.8-million two tiered sponsorship for stadium naming rights and amateur cricket over a five year period reinforces the stadium’s standing in world cricket and will go a long way to ensuring the stadium is able to maintain its current excellent condition and also fulfill the various strategic directives and initiatives contained in the Eastern Province Amateur Cricket Board’s newly developed strategic plan.

“The sponsorship is unique because while having a commercial base it is much more than that,” said Dave Emslie, CEO of the EP Amateur Cricket Board and Jumbo’s Cricket.

“The Axxess DSL sponsorship now provides us with an increased capacity to further develop cricket within clubs, schools and other cricket support services within the context of the Board’s Strategic Plan.

This sponsorship therefore should be seen not only as an investment in our stadium but in the people of our province.” The sponsorship will make sure the region produces cricketers through the amateur system.
