RU take to the water

The Rhodes University Underwater Club held a mini underwater hockey tournament against Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) and the Border Under Sea Club during August.

The tournament was hosted by Rhodes University at the new Diocesan School for Girls (DSG) Indoor Aquatic Centre, which has an international underwater hockey course marked out.

The Rhodes University Underwater Club held a mini underwater hockey tournament against Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) and the Border Under Sea Club during August.

The tournament was hosted by Rhodes University at the new Diocesan School for Girls (DSG) Indoor Aquatic Centre, which has an international underwater hockey course marked out.

Rhodes fielded two sides of nine players for the tournament, “which is a huge improvement from previous years,” said Caryn McNamara of the underwater club. By the end of the day, it was clear that Border had a superior team, winning all their games.

Results from the various matches:NMMU beat  Rhodes A 3-0; Rhodes A beat Rhodes B 4–1; Rhodes B lost to Border 0–5; Border beat NMMU 6–0; NMMU beat Rhodes B 7–1; Rhodes A lost to Border 0–8.

The Rhodes Underwater Club held its annual Rhodes University Inter Res Underwater hockey tournament at the end of August, which was hosted again in the new Diocesan School for Girls (DSG) Indoor heated Aquatic Center.

There were 16 men’s teams and four women’s teams that entered. The men’s games were broken down into pools and in the semi-finals, Smuts House played Collage House with Smuts coming away with a close 5–4 win.

The Oppies played Centenary, with Centenary having an easy 5–0. The final for the girls was played between New House and Ruth First with the New House team winning the game 8–0. The men’s final saw Centenary outclass Smuts by winning 4–0.
