Tennis champs crowned

Hilton Keeton of the Salem Tennis Cluband Jill Tyson of Clumber Tennis Club werecrowned the men’s and woman’s tennis champions after winning their finals of the Bathurst and Districts Lawn Tennis Association A League Championships on Saturday.

Hilton Keeton of the Salem Tennis Cluband Jill Tyson of Clumber Tennis Club werecrowned the men’s and woman’s tennis champions after winning their finals of the Bathurst and Districts Lawn Tennis Association A League Championships on Saturday.

The championships got under way with first round matches and the semi-finals taking place on Saturday, 22 August at Kenton (A league),Grahamstown (B league) and Shaw Park (C league) tennis clubs.

A few semi-final matches held over from the first round as well as the finals took place at the Grahamstown Tennis Club on Saturday. Stephen Bezuidenhout and Mandy Long were the B League men’s and women’s singles winners respectively.

At the prizegiving function afterwards, Di Hornby (Southwell) was awarded the Most Improved Woman award, while Leslei van der Merwe received the the title of the Most Improved Male.

The Service to Tennis award went to Sheryl Emslie. Results from the finals: A League: men’s singles winner – Hilton Keeton (Salem Tennis Club), runner – up – Dave Lloyd (Clumber); women’s singles winner – Jill Tyson (Clumber), runner up – Shelley Barnes  Webb (Blaaukrantz); men’s doubles winners -Pat Hornby and Bomber Kent (Southwell), runners up – Dave Nicoll and Mike Fuller (Kenton); women’s doubles winners – Sheryl Emslie and Alke Bradfield (Sevenfountains), runners up -Di Hornby and Kathy Court (Southwell); mixed doubles winners – Pat Hornby and Debbie Lowe (Southwell), runners up – Paul Watson and Minette Gleaves (Blaaukrantz).

B League: men’s singles winner – Stephen Bezuidenhout(Coombs Tennis Club), runner up Alcon Jasson (Grahamstown); women’s singles winner – Mandy Long (Coombs), runner up – Sue Dixon (Coombs); men’s doubles winners Glynn Dixon and Leslie van der Merwe (Coombs), runners up – Stephen Bezuidenhout and Chesney Long (Coombs); women’s doubles winners – Sue Dixon and Mandy Long (Coombs), runners up – Nan Townshend and Wendy Ling (Grahamstown); mixed doubles winners – Chesney and Mandy Long (Coombs), runners-up – Glynn and Sue Dixon (Coombs)C League: men’s doubles winners – Chris Nel and Merrick Clayton (Shaw Park), runners up Bev Cummings and Steve van Rooyen (Port Alfred); women’s doubles winners – Pat Shepherd and Gerianne de Klerk (Grahamstown), runners up – Deidre Marais and Betty Brown (Port Alfred); mixed doubles winners – Chris and Liezel Nel (Shaw Park), runners up – Kian Reynolds and Candace Roux (Coombs).
