Supported by Makana Municipality and Pick n Pay, the local branch of the Family and Marriage Association of South Africa (Famsa), held their annual Women’s Day Celebration tournament at JD Dlepu fields in Joza on Saturday.

The annual event saw six township high schools fighting it out on the soccer field, while on the other field four high schools played netball matches.
The schools that participated were Nombulelo, TEM Mrwetyana, Mary Waters, Kutliso Daniels, Nyaluza and Ntsika Secondary Schools.
Anne Harris, the director of Famsa, Grahamstown said it is unusual to include boys in a Women’s Day celebration but “we decided to have males involved in these games because our focus is on promoting respectful relationships both on and off the field between both genders.
It’s not just about women as women do not live in their own little world.” Harris further said that it would be self-defeating to not include the boys, if “we are to go anywhere in terms of correcting ills such as domestic violence.
It’s better to have both groups present so that there can be that appreciation of one another.” The fields at JD Dlepu were packed with learners and live music added to the festive atmosphere.
Masibulele Katyi from Extension 6 said he didn’t really know what the purpose of the event was, but that he had come to enjoy the soccer and the music.
“I just heard that there would be soccer playing and the music will be there,” he said.The soccer final was won by Mary Waters who beat last year’s winners Ntsika while the netball was won by the defending champions Nombulelo High who beat Mary Waters.
