It’s time for the Salem 6-a-side cricket tournament where the local farming communities around the Makana area battle it out on the cricket field.
The tournament, held every second year, takes place at the Salem Cricket Club on Saturday, 12 September.

The tournament, held every second year, takes place at the Salem Cricket Club on Saturday, 12 September.
Eight teams will again be taking part, however, the Purdons are unable to field a full team and will be replaced by the Biggs who will be making their first appearance at the event.
The families taking part are the Amms, Biggs, Brothertons, Emslies, Hobsons, Kings, Longs and the Wilmots. Defending champions are the Emslies, who won the tournament in 1995 and 1997 and 2007. Runners up in 2007 were the Longs who last won the tournament in 2003 and 2005.
Former provincial players taking part in this year’s event include Peter and Philip Amm, Christopher Biggs, David Emslie, Larry and Lloyd Hobson, Cuan King, Sean Long, while Denim Price and Trevor Zimann will be the umpires for the day.
Another first at this year’s tournament will see the format of play changing to round robin. Teams will be split into two sections where they will each other in that section. The winners will then go on to the final round.
After the day’s cricket action there will be a party where Barry Sweetman will provide live entertainment.
In conjunction with the tournament, there will be a potjiekos competition where one can enter as part of a team or individual.
