A shopper believes that her purse was stolen while shopping at Pick n Pay during lunchtime on Friday, 24 July. Shaun Cerini, the store manager at Pick n Pay in Grahamstown, could not comment on the incident.

Based on two recent incidents of theft at Checkers where purses were stolen from customer’s handbags, a statement was released by Esmeralda Essex and Sarita van Wyk, spokespersons for the Shoprite/Checkers group. They sympathised with the customers but reminded shoppers that each person has to take responsibility for their personal belongings while shopping.

According to the duty officer superintendent of the Grahamstown Police, Xolani Ketelo they have received several reports over the past weeks regarding theft from retail stores.

Ketelo said that in most cases women have been targeted because they tend to leave their handbags in their trolleys while shopping. He further mentioned that the security at supermrkets is very good, but "we remain concerned regarding the lack of vigilance of members of the prettier sex."
