Gaming Internet centre LANslide, established in June 2009 by a Rhodes University student and two young locals, provides computers for the public to play multiplayer games.

The creators were bored with typical activities, such as going to the cinema and watching TV and decided to take part in Lan competitions where they established LANslide.

The computers used were donated by the Hilltop Community Centre.

"When we received the computers they were broken and needed fixing and re-furbishing so we did that ourselves and thus far they are working perfectly," said manager Kyle Berrisford.

Co-owner, Lasse Manson said, "We wanted people to come and enjoy playing games with all of their friends. We have over 13 games, including War Craft 3 and other open source games available via the internet."

Prices at the centre range from R9 for members and R15 for non-members per hour. Everyone is welcome, but more games are for people above 12 years old, and players are able to bring their laptop as internet ports are available.

"Business was slow at the beginning but things are now speeding up and many school kids come and play games here, especially during the weekend," said Manson.

The game society head lan at Rhodes University, Garrett Eriksen, said they are making plans to join forces with LANslide but that details have not yet been finalised.

Competitions and tournaments will be held with prizes to be won.

"This is a safe way of entertaining yourself, especially for kids. It keeps them away from dangerous activities," said Manson.
