Makana Tourism has exciting plans to celebrate Tourism Month in September. Tourism Month is designed to inform South Africans about the importance of tourism to the country’s economy. An additional purpose is to alert locals to the attractions within their own areas. Makana tourism director Willem Makkink said, "People forget that apart from providing information to tourists and marketing the area to potential tourists, they may not realise that the best tourists are the locals. Hopefully, we will be able to increase civic pride and enable the residents to persuade visitors to spend at least an extra night in Makana which will further boost the local economy." In aid of this and to celebrate Tourism Month in general, Makana has planned a few packages that will showcase the area to residents and visitors alike. “We are planning a series of tours that will showcase the area," said Makkink. "We hope to teach the residents of Makana about the myriad of attractions and activities that are to be found here. We are thus planning tours of the town, the surrounding villages and sites and the game reserves. These will cost a nominal fee to defray costs or else will be complimentary."
