The Graeme College 1st rugby team gained a hard fought 27-17 victory over Winterberg in Fort Beaufort last Wednesday.

Graeme dominated most facets of the game but Winterberg were determined not to let them get on top and defended with great determination.

Graeme kicked a penalty and Winterberg scored an unconverted try to lead 5-3 after 15 minutes. Graeme spent the rest of the half in Winterberg’s territory and this constant pressure resulted in great tries for center Tommy Banks and lock Robert Louw.

Flyhalf Carl Oerson converted both tries and at the break Graeme led 17-5.Graeme should have closed out the match early in the second half but missed scoring opportunities after good buildups.

Winterberg then scored a try against the run of play and were suddenly back in the match at 12-17. Carl Oerson kicked a further penalty for Graeme to lead 20-12 only for Winterberg to score another try in the corner through their lock forward to make the score 20-17.

It was left to prop Jade Bowles to barge over after a storming run which came after a good phase buildup, to secure the match for Graeme.

Oerson converted for the final 27-17 tally. Graeme flanker Juandre Nel gave an outstanding performance and he was well supported by prop Chad Banfield and center Banks.Hooker Matthew Booth excelled in taking four heels against the head.
