The FNB Eastern Cape Inter-Varsity organising committee meet today to decide wether to go ahead with the weekend’s sporting events, or to can it altogether.

Last week Rhodes University called off all sporting activities over the weekend until today due to the high prevalence of flu in Grahamstown at present.

“Apparently sporting activities have been cancelled across the country,” said Roger Adams, head of sport at Rhodes Sports Administration, adding “The student who died from swine flu at Stellenbosch University apparently played rugby shortly beforehand.

According to doctors, the flu strain that is going around Grahamstown is likely to abate by this week, which could see things turn around”.

The second threat to the possible postponement of Inter-Varsity is that “Rhodes workers in the lower pay classes are involved in a strike which does not seem to have an early resolution in sight according to our university management.”

Adams added “This has implications for the Inter-Varsity from the point of view of possible disruptions and the unavailability of security personnel who are striking.

“Given these threats, I suggest that we make a final call by next Tuesday afternoon 11 August on whether to go ahead or postpone Inter-Varsity.”

This year’s Inter-Varsity sees Walter Sisulu University joining Rhodes (the hosts this year), Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and Fort Hare University in the sporting event.
