Victoria Girls’ High School hosted the annual derby day against its big rival Port Alfred High School in wet and rainy conditions last Friday.

The two schools met on the hockey field, netball courts and squash courts, and also competed in cultural activities, chess and debating. Despite the rain, VG pupils came out in full force to support their teams.

The derby day events ended with the two schools’ 1st hockey sides meeting on the VG sports field. The VG side dominated the match, with much of the first half being played in the Port Alfred half of the field. VG had a number of scoring opportunities, but many chances were blocked by the very strong Port Alfred keeper. VG missed a penalty awarded to them in the first half, but they did find the net before half-time. This was the only goal of the match, with a final score of 1-0 to VG.
VG went on to win both the U16 and U14 netball matches, before the rain set in, which saw the U19 game called off due to the wet court. The VG U16 netball side won their match 20-5, while the U14’s won 20-8.
The squash matches ended in a 7-7 draw, while the 2nds hockey also ended in a draw, 1-1. VG won the chess 5-2 and also went on to win the debate, the topic of which was Nelson Mandela’s birthday being a public holiday.
Publicity officer at VG, Nicci Hayes said the derby was played in a good spirit, and that it was great to have all the various events at the school.
