Rhodes University Rugby Club had a good tournament this year winning two out of three matches in their Pool B group at the University Sports South Africa rugby tournament.

Their opening match against Vaal University of Technology saw Rhodes completely dominating the match in all departments. Rhodes had a good 23-0 lead at half time, and started the second half in the same tempo they ended the first. Rhodes went on to win 48-3.

Rhodes then faced the Central University of Technology (CUT) in their second match and Rhodes again dominated the opening stages as their efforts were rewarded with two penalties. Following these penalties CUT regrouped and took the game to Rhodes and their persistence paid off as they beat Rhodes backline to score a try. The score was 6-5 to Rhodes at half-time.

The second half started slowly with both teams showing signs of fatigue but CUT showed more urgency going forward, putting more pressure on Rhodes. This led to CUT neglecting their defensive duties and were caught on the counter attack by Rhodes scoring a great try after an interception from the half way line. CUT came back and scored two tries and a penalty to make the final score 18-11 to CUT.

The Rhodes team’s last match was against their provincial neighbours, Walter Sisulu University – Buffalo Campus. Rhodes went on to beat them 36 – 6 to finish 2nd in the log.
