It’s that time of the year again – when Grahamstonians are asked to nominate special citizens who are serving our community above and beyond the call of duty.

This year’s Citizen of the Year Award also marks the 10th anniversary of the Rotary Club of Grahamstown Sunset who introduced the award in 2000 to recognise and honour local citizens who are examples of the Rotary maxim “service Above self”.

Organiser of this year’s event, Rotarian Tim Dold said, “We have nine special citizens now who represent the spirit of the Citizen of the Year award who will choose the next Citizen of the Year.”  Former Grahamstown Citizens of the Year are Dr Mary Knowling (2001), Grace Ngcete (2007), and last year’s winner, Grahamstown dance phenomenon, “Mama Janet” Buckland.

The Rotary Club of Grahamstown Sunset has once again secured the support of Pepper Grove Pick n Pay as prime sponsor. Former Citizen of the Year for 2002, and co-owner of Pepper Grove Pick ‘n Pay, Mark Shelton, supports the event for the third year in a row with a sponsorship which awards cash amounts donated to the charities of their choice.

The closing date for nominations is the end of August. Criteria for nomination include the following: someone who creates a sense of civic pride;  who serves the community selflessly and without thought of reward; who inspires people with courage and determination; who has achieved an extraordinary success and brought honour to Grahamstown. “We really need the people of Grahamstown to tell us about people doing selfless work out there,” said Dold.

The bright yellow nomination forms can be obtained from Pick n Pay, Daphne Timm Properties or PG Glass. Tickets for the fabulous gala dinner-dance, can be bought at Pam Golding Properties.
