Spokesperson Captain Ndivhelafhi Mamuthubi said the woman was crossing the street when a white Toyota Venture knocked her down.

“The accident took place at 7.25pm, the deceased was trying to cross the road from the left hand side. She was certified dead after an ambulance arrived,” said Mamuthubi. The woman was a resident of Fingo Village. Mamuthubi said that a case of culpable homicide has been opened and is under investigation.

When a Grocott’s Mail photographer arrived at the scene, the police had already cordoned it off and the section of the road where the woman lay had to be blocked off. Makana traffic officers who were redirecting traffic had their hands full in the traffic congested Raglan Road. There was more traffic than normal as visitors to the National Arts Festival made their way in and out of the townships on a busy Friday night.

Meanwhile, an eyewitness said he was standing in front of Chan Hendry general dealers when the accident happened. The woman was knocked down about 100 metres from the shop.

“I heard a bang,” the Fingo Village resident said. At first he ignored the sound but when he looked around, “people were piling up”.

He said the woman has her own business selling liquor and was walking home with her husband after work. “The husband crossed first and the woman was following behind. I then heard a bang,” he said. He said the husband was also alerted by the sound.

The eyewitness said he then went to take a close look he saw the woman lying in the road.

The windscreen of the vehicle was smashed and it is believed that the woman’s head banged against it. He described the driver of the Venture as an old person dressed in overalls.

The eyewitness complained that the pedestrian crossings on Raglan Road were “useless” as motorists mostly just ignore them and speed past.
