The public viewing area (PVA) for the 2009 Fifa Confederations Cup, hosted at Miki Yili Stadium, was a huge success, with hundreds of residents taking part in the day’s activities.

The PVA was set up for the Cacadu District, although there was no transport for people from other areas in the district to attend the screening.Jeff Budaza, Makana 2010 co-ordinator said he has been in talks with various stakeholders and they will be transporting people across the Cacadu district to the PVA venue for next year’s 2010 Fifa World Cup.

This year’s PVA, which broadcast live the third and fourth playoffs and the final of the Confederations Cup, was a warm-up for the 2010 World Cup, when every match will be broadcast live on the big screens at the PVA. On Saturday, there were two large screens on either side of a stage, which was used for entertainment in between the two matches.

Budaza said “Everything went well, besides the weather which we don’t have control over,” adding that the number of visitors throughout the day were very good considering the cold and wet weather.

Budaza said that about 2 500 vuvuzelas and over 2 000 t-shirts and flags were handed out over the weekend. As a warm up it was a good preparation and he said they now know what to expect for the main PVA during next year’s World Cup, which coincides with the Grahamstown National Arts Festival.
