Business was interrupted on Monday morning when three armed suspects overpowered a Coin security guard and escaped with a sum of R250 000 in cash.
Acccording to SAPS communication officer, Ndivelafhi Mamuthubi, the manager of Standard Bank prepared money for Coin Security’s collection and handed the case over to one of the security guards. While the security guard was loading the case into the vehicle- which was parked behind Standard Bank- three armed men approached him.
As one of the three suspects grabbed the case, his two partners in crime were keeping a lookout. They then managed to overpower him and got away all the money.
Mamuthubi says there were no shots fired and the robbers managed to get away in a 1400 bakkie which was later discovered by the police in Cobden Street. He also said the bakkie was not reported stolen. When the police arrived at Cobden Street, the three suspects were nowhere to be found.
A witness (who wished to remain anonymous) said he saw a white 1400 bakkie parked in Cobden Street and saw three men quickly climbing out of the vehicle. He says he only realised later that day that the police were looking for the same men who were in the bakkie.
When Grocott’s Mail contacted the branch manager of Standard Bank, he said he was in no position to comment. He also said he couldn’t comment about the scene because the case is still under investigation.
Although there no suspects have been arrested, Mamuthubi says the police managed to get a description of two suspects who were involved in the robbery. He also says that the matter is still under investigation and urges anyone with information to report it immediately.
