Locals are waiting for Thursday’s council meeting after rumours of a vote of no confidence against Makana Mayor, Pumelelo Kate gained momentum. Anonymous sources in the ANC say that Kate’s would be ousted a the meeting as the party has lost confidence in his ability to deliver services to the community and his loyalty to the party.

"I’m aware of such a rumour but it remains a rumour until it happens," said Kate.

The meeting is scheduled to approve the 2009/10 budget which Kate presented to communities around Makana last Thursday.

Root of the matter
The problems between Kate and his party’s leadership spilled into the public arena during a budget imbizo at the Public Library Activities Room. The leaders lambasted Kate for the municipality’s inability to deliver basic services.

One of the party’s regional leaders, Nodidi Maselana, accused the mayor of lacking leadership skills and asserted that it was time for him to leave the office as he was not in touch with the needs of the residents.

But Kate interjected and said, "Nodidi I know what your problem with me is, now can you please hold your emotions."

Kate said that the negative comments made by local ANC leaders at the meeting should not be mistaken for the ruling party’s views on his council’s performance but rather as statements from certain members of the party.

The rumoured vote of no confidence follows the collapse of negotiations on the swop deal between Kate and the party’s regional leadership.

This deal was meant to see Kate and the Cacadu district council’s head of infrastructure councillor Vumile Lwana swop positions but the negotiations collapsed before the recent general elections.

The ANC were not available to comment.
