The fatal stabbing of a young man over a quarrel has left two families in shock.

Lunga Kolisi (24), who was also known as Boy, was stabbed to death by his friend Thandolwethu Makalo (22). The two allegedly had an argument after a minor altercation outside a spaza shop.

Boy’s sister, Ntombi Kolisi, said that they don’t know what caused the fight. They were told by Boy’s friend, Siyabonga Sokhiya that "an argument between Boy and Makalo had started over a box of matches".

Sokhiya said that he and Boy were together at Boy’s place before visiting a nearby spaza shop.

Ntombi said Boy was still breathing when the ambulance was called. However, the paramedics certified him as dead before the ambulance left the scene. Boy’s mother Nosandile Kolisi, could not speak to Grocott’s Mail as she was still in a state of shock.

Makalo was rushed to Settler’s Hospital and was confirmed to be in stable condition. Makalo’s parents Nono and Mzwamadoda said they were both shocked by what happened because the two families where related.

"Boy’s family clan name is Tshawe and my wife’s clan name is also Tshawe, this really came as a shock to us because the two families have always been close,” Mzwamadoda said.

Nono said that Boy and Makalo had been together the night before the incident. "When I left home to attend a funeral on Saturday they were still sleeping in Makalo ‘s bedroom because they were together on Friday night and they slept late,” she said. Mzwamadoda said he and his wife are having sleepless nights because of this incident.

The police are investigating a case of murder and no arrests have been made yet. They could not confirm claims that the two men were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. Police spokesperson Milanda Coetzer said that they heard from eye witnesses that the two men had consumed alcohol but said that this could not be confirmed until a post-mortem has taken place. "Even then we can’t disclose such information because it may interfere with the investigation" Coetzer said.
