Seven men and six women students have been nominated for the Rhodes University Sport Council’s Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year.
The Sports Awards dinner takes place on 10 October where all the various sporting codes at Rhodes University will be represented.
Seven men and six women students have been nominated for the Rhodes University Sport Council’s Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year.
The Sports Awards dinner takes place on 10 October where all the various sporting codes at Rhodes University will be represented.
Other awards to be made include Club of the Year, Most Improved Club of Year, Committee of the Year, Coach of the Year, Performance of the Year, Administrator of the Year, Inter-res men and women winners and Inter-res spirit award.
The seven men nominated for the Sportsman of the Year award are:
• Gavin Tweddle for archery.
Tweddle is the best performing Rhodes compound archer of this year, consistently winning medals which include silver at Eastern Province and Rhodes indoor champs, as well as bronze at NMMU, EP champs and Trivarsity.
He has received Eastern Province full Fita archery colours and Rhodes colours, all this while still making time for his PhD and coaching beginners.
• David Krige for aquatics.
Krige received Rhodes colours and is a memeber of the Eastern Province Senior A waterpolo team.
• Sandimampita Razafimbola for basketball.
A Rhodes Honours students who is part of the Madagascan Senior national team, Eastern Province senior A basketball team and USSA EC Senior A team.
Razafimbola received a bronze medal playing for Rhodes at the USSA National games and is also a coach for the Rhodes men’s A team.
• Andrew Roberts for hockey.
Received Rhodes colours and was selected for the National Hockey League senior A team and the Eastern Province Senior A hockey team.
Roberts has been a Rhodes Women’s A team coach for the past two years and is the Rhodes Men’s A team captain.
• Tim Hulley for canoeing.
He obtained Rhodes colours for sport and took 1st place at the U21 K2 SA Marathon champs, 3rd place at EP U21 K1 champs, 1st place in Big Water Fish in age group, 1st place in EP U21 K2 champs and 2nd place in the U21 Tugela race.
• James Dillon for canoeing.
Dillon got Rhodes colours and achieved 1st place at the U21 K2 SA Marathon Champs, 1st place in Big Water Fish in his age group, 1st place in EP U21 K2 Champs and 2nd place in the U21 Tugela race.
• Cameron Smith for mountaineering.
Cameron received Rhodes Colours and Finished 4th overall at USSA Indoor Climbing Champs.
Achieved 8205 points on the 8a.nu climbing system.
The six women nominated for Sportswoman of the Year are:
• Kim O’Hanlon for aquatics.
Obtained her Rhodes colours and made it into the Border Senior A Waterpolo team.
• Marili Vlok for target shooting.
A Rhodes Honours student, Vlok is the South African senior number two and the Eastern Province Senior A No 1 for men and women.
• Emma Savage for basketball.
Received her Rhodes colours and made the Eastern Province Senior A basketball team as well as the USSA EC Senior A team.
• Alex Adie for canoeing.
Sports Rhodes colours and achieved 1st place at U21 Kowie Race, 1st place in EP U21 K1 champs and 6th place in U21 Tugela race.
• Micheen Thornycroft for rowing.
Rhodes Colours. Selected for the South African Student Blues crew, is a member of the Rhodes University coxless 4 that rowed at Henley and was also a member of the Rhodes University A8 crew which won silver at the University Boat Races in Port Alfred this year.
• Thandolwethu Zono for hockey.
Rhodes Colours and was selected as part of the South African U18A hockey team.
