This is an open letter to anyone who is in charge of the eradication of the bucket toilet system.

I live in an unfortunate location, Mission where the bucket system is still being used. The last time our buckets were collected was on the 17th of this month and until today (the 29th) there was no other collection. For the collection on the 17th I had to go to the Municipality to inform them about the need for the collection.

This is a crisis for us, we have children whose health is at risk because of these overflowing buckets. Maybe the reason why we are ignored is the fact that the people in charge are not experiencing the problem themselves. Not long ago they were driving around with a loudspeaker announcing meetings and they even went to our location because voting time is drawing near.

They never ignore us when it’s voting time but they do when it comes to service delivery. We’re begging whoever is in charge to take this matter seriously. We’re forced to go to the bushes like when we were still living on farms and even farms are better today because they have flushing toilets. I’m looking forward to the time when I’ll sit comfortably in my new toilet, if that time ever comes.
