The 2017 Tourism educators in conjunction with the learners have embarked on a tour that would make a lifetime mind shift. The Cape Town / Oudtshoorn Tour has been blessed from the word go. The staff, principal, parents and learners were passionate about getting this done. Parents like Marcelle Burgess, Sergio Rademeyer, Marilyn Witbooi, Jamela Oerson and Felicia Rademeyer formed a committee that was dedicated to making this tour a success. Cabinet has approved the National Minimum Wage Bill, Basic Conditions of Employment Amendment Bill and Labour Relations Amendment Bill. These bills will now be submitted to the National Assembly and National Council of Provinces for concurrence and enactment. In February 2017, representatives from government, business, labour and the community sector signed agreements at the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) on measures to strengthen labour stability and collective bargaining and on how to introduce a National Minimum Wage. Hundreds of athletes took to the streets of Grahamstown on Thursday 19 October for the annual Rapportryers Hoërskool PJ Olivier 5km Fun Run/Walk. This year’s event attracted over 300 entries, and R12 000 raised for the Grahamstown Residents’ Association (GRA). The race was won by Masixole Xayiya in 20 minutes 07 seconds; followed home by Stegman van Zyl in 20:30. DSG pupil, Kendal Rose was the women’s winner in 22:42, followed by Terri-Lynn Penney in 25:52 and Jene Banfield in 26:11. The first PJ Olivier pupil home was Daniel Retief who finished in 23:32. The annual Pick n Pay Albany Bowling Club Night League is at the business end, with play-offs taking place next week, leading to the finals on 10 November. Twenty four teams divided into two sections that have been playing on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the Albany Bowling Club, in a series of round robin games that began on 3 October. Mpho Tutu, who spent much of her childhood in Grahamstown was a guest speaker at the Botho/Ubuntu: A Dialogue on Spirituality, Science and Humanity, A Mind & Life Dialogue with the Dalai Lama, which took place in Gaborone, Botswana in August. Mpho was there to welcome His Holiness the Dalai Lama on behalf of her parents, Leah, and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu. In the end, the Dalai Lama was unable to attend the event.
