Rhodes University has closed its Health Suite and suspended all sporting activities with immediate effect due to concerns relating to "flu and related illness". Roger Adams, the Head of Sport at Rhodes, circulated a notice to university staff and students this morning with the announcement. The notice read:
“I want to get involved in the government,” a young woman announces from the back of the lecture theatre at Rhodes University’s Eden Grove. “I want to get involved in the government – not because I am inspired. Because I’m frustrated.”

A group of North American Church Bell Ringers are due to embark on their debut visit to South Africa. This is the first tour by a band of ringers from North America and will run from 1 August to 15 August. The team includes ringers from various famous towers including the National Cathedral in Washington DC.

The second round of the Grahamstown High Schools Football League kicked off last week, although the first match did not take place. The opening round two match between TEM Mrwetyana Secondary School and Mary Waters Secondary School was abandoned last Wednesday, because of a teacher’s meeting, said Mandla Gagayi, coordinator of the high schools league.
