Gale-force winds couldn't stop players in the Ladies' GBS Mutual Bank Golf Open from achieving some excellent scores last Saturday.
The day dawned with overcast conditions, a welcome relief for after the roasting highs of the previous few days, but the clouds were accompanied by gale-force gusts.
In spite of this, there were some excellent scores on the day. The winner, on 42 points, was Grahamstown member Jean Austin, followed by Lynn West from Port Alfred on 41 points.
Nadine Colucci, from Walmer Golf Club, came third with 38 points, on a count out from local player Wilma Pellissier.
Colucci is the longest-standing visitor to play in the Grahamstown Ladies' Open, having entered annually since 1996.
Playing the course for the very first time, Dudu Ndhlovu, a 14-handicapper visiting from Port Elizabeth Golf Club, came in with a very creditable 35 points in seventh position and promised to return next year.
A good-sized field of 48 players took part, an increase of over 25% on last year’s Open, with visitors coming from Bedford, Port Elizabeth and Port Alfred.
Captain Belinda Tudge and the committee expressed grateful thanks to the main sponsors of the event, GBS Mutual Bank, as well as to the many local businesses and individuals who sponsored holes or donated prizes.
Visitors complimented the Grahamstown golf women on their hospitality and superb catering and promised to come back in 2014.
