There were smiles aplenty at Good Shepherd School on Tuesday morning, as each pupil received a pair of new school shoes.
This was part of the Put Foot Foundation’s 2013 Shoe Drive, a national campaign which raises funds to buy school shoes for needy pupils around South Africa.
At least 1 000 pairs of shoes were distributed to pupils from DD Siwisa Primary, Grahamstown Primary and Good Shepherd School.
“This has really made the kids' hearts happy,” said Good Shepherd’s principal, Cecile Mager.
Grahamstown was the second stop in Put Foot’s campaign which started in Cape Town last week, and moves on to Durban and Johannesburg.
The foundation hopes to donate 3 000 pairs of shoes in the month-long shoe drive.
Put Foot Foundation was founded in 2012 by St Andrew’s College pupil Daryn Hillhouse, with friends Mike Sharman and Dan Nash.
It has partnered with the St Andrew’s and DSG’s community engagement programmes, which helped distribute the new shoes last week.
St Andrew’s pupil, Ruben Scholtz, said it felt good to help out those who could not afford their own shoes.
Put Foot also encourages and supports the conservation and protection of endangered animals in South Africa, particularly the rhino.
