Makana Higher Primary soccer team were overall winners of the recent Sakhulutsha Soccer Development Project's U15 soccer festival. All matches were held at the Rhodes University King Field.
Teams taking part were Makana Higher Primary, Makana United, Fingo, Bathurst, Somerset and Sakhulutsha. Makana Higher Primary beat Somerset 1-0 in the final. Sakhulutsha Soccer Development Project leader, Siyabonga Masinda, said the U15 festival was part of Sakhulutsha's goal to play between 70 and 90 matches a year.
The side fell well short of that goal, however, only playing half that number. Masinda said he plans to take the Sakhulutsha U15 team beyond Grahamstown next year, so he can meet his 70- to 90-match target. Masinda also has about twelve under-15 players whom he intends taking to various professional soccer teams next year, as part of the project's youth development.
The festival is set to become an annual event, with Masinda positive that many more teams will take part next year. Masinda said the festival had been a great success, with all the teams showing up for the event.
