You matter because you are. That's the basis of Hospice's life-affirming philosophy – providing support and care for people with incurable and life threatening conditions so they may live as fully and comfortably as possible. Hospice aims to offer the right kind of care and to promote a caring community sensitive to the needs of patients and their families.

It's to show our gratitude for the valuable work of this dedicated group of people that this year the Grocott's Mail's Christmas Cheer Fund will go to the Grahamstown Hospice which is a member of the Hospice Palliative Care Association of South Africa. Please open your hearts and your wallets to aid this worthy cause and support this organisation caring for our community.

Drop by the italGrocott's Mail/ital offices during office hours to make a donation, or deposit it into our account:

    A way of caring

Hospice organisations look after people suffering from an advanced life threatening illness – their disease is incurable. This includes people of all ages.

Each hospice organisation may offer a different type of service to the community – the most common one being a home care service.

Other services include in-patient units for some hospices, day centres, bereavement services, clinics and programmes for children. Each hospice organisation determines its own services according to community needs and resources.

    Hospice care is:

    • Based on a philosophy and a way of offering care and is not about a place or a building. Hospices do not necessarily have in-patient beds.
    • A service driven and defined by the needs of the community it is serving.
    • Delivered to a patient in their home, or wherever they live.
    • About meeting a patient's care needs and is not limited by their ability to pay.

    Hospice philosophy

    • Hospice affirms life. Hospice exists to provide support and care for people with incurable and life threatening conditions so that they may live as fully and comfortably as possible.
    • Hospice recognises dying as a normal process and neither hastens nor postpones death.
    • Hospice exists in the hope and belief that, through appropriate care and the promotion of a caring community sensitive to their needs, patients and their families may be free to attain a degree of mental and spiritual preparation for death that is satisfactory to them.
    • Hospice recognises grief as a normal response to loss, and therefore support to the families continues into the bereavement period.

    You matter because you are,
You matter to the last moment of your life,
And we will do all we can –
Not only to help you die peacefully –
But to LIVE until you die.
    – Dame Cicely Saunders,
    St Christopher’s Hospice
