Mary Waters High School took second spot in the annual provincial Peter Mkata Memorial schools rugby tournament in Port Elizabeth, from 26 to 28 August.
Mary Waters represented the Cacadu region, after being announced winners after the Albany event.
Mary Waters made it to the final of the tournament, where they lost to Jamangil's Secondary School (representing the Amathole district). The Mary Waters team were outplayed in the final, after three tough games leading up to itl. They lost 0-11 in the final.
The Cacadu representatives were crowned runners-up and received a shield, and each member received a silver medal. Now Mary Waters is ranked number two among previously disadvantaged schools in the province.
Leading up to the finals, Mary Waters were first scheduled to meet Alfred Nzo on Friday, but due to the latter side not arriving on time, Mary Waters were awarded soft points. Mary Waters then faced Ukhahlamba representatives on Saturday morning and lost the match 0-16. In the afternoon, Mary Waters beat the NMM2 side 7-5.
Mary Waters then went through to the play-offs, meeting NMM1 in the semi-final. The Mary Waters team found this a tough encounter, as both teams were unable to score due to good defence from both sides. Mawas won the match 6-3.
Meanwhile, Grahamstown's top referee, Sindile Ngcese was named as the referee of the tournament. Ngcese refereed three matches at the Peter Mkata tournament, including the final.
Ngcese also recently returned from the Maties Rugby Referee Academy where he spent a month training with the academy. He is also part of the South African rugby referee academy squad.
