I’m sure we have all heard stories of heartache and tragedy. In fact, I’m quite sure we all have our own stories to tell of struggle and hurt. Crisis moments are inevitable since we live in an unpredictable world, a world full of uncertainty. So where do we turn, to whom do we turn to find peace of mind? When we are in the midst of a real crisis – when the storm is intense – we usually go anywhere we can escape the danger. Someone has said, “All we know is what we’re running from, even if we’re not so particular about what we’re running to.”
Well, for the Christian, their ultimate safe place, “strong tower,” is the “name of the Lord.”
“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. The wealth of the rich is their fortified city; they imagine it an unscalable wall.” (Proverbs 18:10-11)
Our place of safety is not just God in general but His wonderful attributes that make Him sufficient for every storm. We run to His character. The name of the Lord, God’s name, represents more than just something we call Him; it represents who He is, His person, His character. The name of the Lord defines reveals the true nature of God, who He really is, reminding us of the One in whom we can place our faith and trust.
Proverbs (18:10-11) gives us two different options for facing crisis moments in life…we can put our faith and trust in the wealth and security of the world, which is unpredictable and uncertain, or we can place our faith and trust in the name of the Lord who unchangeable, just, true and faithful.
Let me briefly remind you of the character of your God from the Old Testament. His name is:- Jehovah Jireh – the Lord will provide (Genesis 22:14) – Jehovah Shammah – the Lord is there (Ezekiel 48:35) – Jehovah Shalom – the Lord sends peace (Judges 6:24) – Jehovah Tsidkenu – the Lord our righteousness (Jeremiah 23:6).
Let me briefly remind you of the character of your God from the New Testament (John 1). His name is:- The Word, the Lamb of God, the Son of God, Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth, Rabbi, King of Israel.
Dear friend, in times of crisis, know where you’re running, run to His character of faithfulness and goodness to His heart of love and compassion…run to Him who is a safe tower.
