K9 Tracker dog Black with his handler Warrant Officer Konzani followed a trail 10km from the scene of a break-in to discover R15 000 worth of stolen goods hidden in the bush.
Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said Black’s specialised sniffing skills were requested Tuesday 13 November following a house break-in at Seafield in Port Alfred.
“The Grahamstown K9 tracker dog handler W/O Konzani responded with his eager and enthusiastic K9 partner,” Govender said.
“On arrival on the scene, the handler looked for footprints but could not find any. He then worked out the exit route with the aid of Black who picked up a scent and followed it for approximately 10km when he reacted.”
From bushes in the area, the handler recovered several items including a laptop, two gas bottles, and a black suitcase filled with clothing. The approximate value of the items recovered was R15 000.
All the items would be checked for forensic evidence in an attempt to establish a link with the possible suspect or suspects. No arrests had been made, Govender said.
“Black was rewarded with a treat for his successful find.”
