City Pirates were made to walk the plank when Joza rivals Mighty Chiefs beat them 1-0 in a Makana Junior Football league fixture at JD Dlepu Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
It was a seesaw fixture which was dominated by some superb wing play as the centre of the pitch was waterlogged, rendering the attacking mid fielders redundant.
Despite the unfavourable field conditions, Mighty Chiefs signalled their intentions early on with a couple of surges down the right flank, but those came to nothing.
Pirates could make no headway through the Chiefs wing backs, who were solid on defence and enterprising when helping out on attack.
Chiefs then tightened the screws, controlling both possession and territory and the Pirates goalkeeper pulled off some excellent saves to deny them.
The Chiefs took the lead when Pirates' inability to deal with the high caught up with them. Pirates managed to keep Chiefs out of their final third until halftime.
The second half resumed with Chiefs hogging the ball, giving Pirates no room to manoeuvre. The Chiefs wingers gave the Pirates fullbacks plenty of headaches with some smart interplay, but poor finishing with some great goalkeeping conspired to keep the score at 1-0.
Pirates got their act together towards the end of the game and started to string together a number of passes, but the Chiefs' rearguard, which was not too busy, was dense and easily kept them at bay.
