Local primary schools were invited to participate in some soccer and netball as part of a Love Life youth festival last week.

Local primary schools were invited to participate in some soccer and netball as part of a Love Life youth festival last week.

With the purpose of involving local township youth with sports and life skills and away from substance abuse and crime the theme of the festival was Sifunda Sidlala (we learn while we play).

Not only were the schools playing for fun, the winners in each age category were to get a chance to further play in a cluster tournament against teams from Peddie and Alicedale.

The winners then will take part in a Cacadu district tournament. Socially active, especially in HIV/Aids related issues from the angle of the youth, Love Life groundbreakers’ and mpintshis (volunteers) conduct a number of youth engagement programmes in local communities nationwide.

“It’s not always that you find bright learners at schools, so when a learner struggles academically, there should be sport codes available as other career options.

This programme is for learners to play but also to learn at the same time,” said Love Life co-ordinator Xolani Nxuzula.

DD Siwisa, Makana and Kuyasa Special School took part in both U13 and U15 soccer and netball matches. Here follows a summary of each match.

    Soccer
    U13A: Makana 3-1 DD Siwisa
Makana launched several attacks at DD Siwisa from the beginning of the game. Lonwabo Stemper and Mpumzi Gotyana netted two goals for Makana before DD Siwisa Simamkele Madyo scored one in for DD Siwisa, making it 2-1.

In the second half Makana kept on invading the DD Siwisa territory until they were awarded a goal scored by Azola Swaartbooi.

Makana were declared the overall winners in the U13 category since they had no other opponent to face.

U15: Kuyasa Special School 0-2 City Angels
City Angels was called to play against Kuyasa Special School who had no opponent. In the 14th minute a penalty was awarded to Kuyasa who were showing confidence upfront but as the shot hit the post they got back into play.

The Angels then took  advantage of the overlapped Kuyasa defence to score an opening goal. Not long after, Angels launched a run from midfield through to set up Sinawo Cwesa, who out-dribbled the defence to scored the second  goal.

The second half saw several attempts from both sides but no goals were produced. City Angels went on to play DD Siwisa in the finals of the U15s soccer, where the game ended 0-0 after full-time. City Angels then beat DD Siwisa 3-4 on penalties to win the U15 finals of the tournament.

    Netball
U13: Makana Primary lost 1-4 to DD Siwisa.
The previous losers, Makana played Kuyasa and Makana won the match by 9-0. Makana faced DD Siwisa in what was the finals, where DD Siwisa defeated Makana by 4-1.

U15: DD Siwisa was walking over Kuyasa who only had two points to reply to DD Siwisa’s seven points as the game ended 7-1 to DD Siwisa.

In the finals DD Siwisa played Makana who beat them by 7-5 to claiming the first place.
