The Grahamstown branch of Steers on High Street was robbed at around midnight on Sunday, shortly after the Soccer World Cup final. Three armed men stormed into the fast food store as the staff were doing cash-up and preparing to leave, getting away with about R20 000, according to Pierre Pienaar, the store’s manager.

Two of the armed men ushered staff to the back of the store, while the third stole money from the safe. The men were wearing balaclavas and latex gloves. "They appeared to know what they were doing, as they went straight to the safe," said Pienaar.

Employee Precious Mqubuli was on duty at the time. "I heard screaming and saw them come in. I ran to the back. A man came in with a gun and kept telling us to shut up," she said.

Three men were spotted waiting outside the store in a white Volkswagen Jetta at around closing time, but the staff members thought nothing of it. Grocott’s Mail contacted Grahamstown police on Monday morning, who said they were investigating the incident and could not provide any further information. No arrests had been made.
