THE Graeme College first rugby team will take part in a rugby tour to Australia on 25 June, which will see 22 rugby players taking part in the tour.

The team will spend a week in Sydney where they will play a match against Endeavour Sports College before moving on to Brisbane to take part in the Southern Skies Tournament.

The tournament involves over 100 schools teams from around the world who will participate in five different sporting codes, including rugby.

The Graeme team will also enjoy a three days of sightseeing in Sydney where they will take in many famous landmarks and get a feel of Aussie life and culture.

Tremendous entertainment has been organised in Brisbane as part of the tournament and the Graeme team will present an item at a cultural concert attended by the 100 world teams. Also part of the tour will be four staff  members and a number of parents who will accompany the team on the tour.

They will return to Grahamstown on 11 June. A massive fundraising initiative by the Graeme community has come to fruition and Graeme first team rugby coach, Brendan Grant said: “The support in fundraising from parents, the school and the broader Grahamstown community has been phenomenal and in excess of R350 000 has been raised toward the project.Graeme College would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to all the people of Grahamstown, who have contributed to this project becoming a reality.”

Accompanying Grant on the tour will be Pierre Jacobs (assistant coach), Nico van der Meulen (tour manager) and school headmaster Peter Reed. The first team captain is Wikus Coetzee.
