Road closure for widening of Great Fish River Bridge in the Eastern Cape
Motorists travelling between Grahamstown and Peddie this week should use the alternative route of the R72 via Port Alfred, Sanral advises, because the N2 east will be closed for long periods Tuesday to Friday for the widening of the Great Fish River Bridge.
The South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd said the work was scheduled to take place on the N2 Section 13, Grahamstown and Peddie, approximately 50km from Grahamstown and 18km from Peddie.
The road will be closed on the following days:
· Tuesday, 24 January: There will be road closures on four separate occasions during the day with an expected delay of one hour per occurrence. The road closures are from 8am-9am; 10am-11am; 12pm-1pm; and 2pm-3pm.
· Wednesday, 25 January: The road will be closed on one occasion during the morning with an expected delay of one hour and two occasions during the afternoon with an expected delay of two hours. The road will be closed from 8am-9am; 11am-1pm and 2pm-4pm.
· Thursday, 26 January: The road will be closed on one occasion during the morning with an expected delay of two hours and two occasions during the afternoon with an expected delay of two hours. The road will be closed from 8am-10am; 11am-1pm; and 2pm-4pm.
· Friday, 27 January: The road will be closed from 8am-10am with an expected delay of two hours.
The construction work that will be carried out is the launching of the beams – the main supports.
This is done using temporary gantries.
Sanral suggested an alternative route for motorists should be the R72 via Port Alfred.
“Motorists are asked to travel with caution and to plan their trips accordingly,” said Mbulelo Peterson, Sanral Southern Region manager.
Meanwhile, roadworks will continue on the N2 from the Komga turn-off (N2/R63 intersection) to the Kei Bridge until June 2017.
The roadworks would include resurfacing of the N2 on both eastbound and westbound carriageways, Sanral said.
"Motorists can expect up to two-lane closures during this period. There will be stop-go sections. The road will be open to two-way traffic between sunset and sunrise daily.
“We request that all motorist plan their trips and to obey all traffic rules,” said Peterson. "Sannral apologises for any inconvenience caused.
