A child drowned in Grey Dam, just outside Grahamstown, late this afternoon.

Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said an 11-year-old boy swimming in the dam drowned around 4.30pm today, Sunday 22 January 2017.

Govender said a fellow swimmer retrieved the body of the child, whose name would be released once his next of kin had been informed.

She said an inquest docket had been opened for investigation.

In hot weather, dozens of children walk  as far as 6km to swim in the dam, around 1.5km south-west of Grahamstown. Today's temperatures were in the upper 30s in the town.
