In a recruitment and activism drive that has seen its membership increase by an impressive 875% (from 46 to 440) in four months, less than a week ahead of its AGM, the Grahamstown Residents’ Association says it is on course to become far more inclusive.
In a media release, chairperson Philip Machanick said, "Residents’ Associations tend to be rather conservative, but here in Grahamstown we’re changing the rules and recruiting residents from all quarters and backgrounds… because we believe it’s the only way we can change the game, get Grahamstown running better and alter a rather negative and divided City with a positive message about a bright future".
At the AGM, the GRA aims to adopt a new constitution to accommodate its ambitious growth plans and allow it to register as a non-profit organisation, "with the attendant financial probity and transparency that will require", Machanick says.
"Makana’s Acting Municipal Manager, Riana Meiring will be giving a presentation, and bringing some of her directors to answer questions," Machanick said. "Like us, she is committed to improving communication, and to reach a wider audience the event will be televised by Grahamstown TV."
GRA's annual general meeting is on Monday 14 March at 6pm. Entry is free for GRA members and new members can join at the door for R10.
