Amatola Water is to open an office in Grahamstown within two weeks. Area operations manager Chris Nair told Grocott’s Mail this weekend that a satellite office – the water utility’s biggest yet – would open in the city before the end of July.
It’s likely to make its operations in Makana Municipality more accessible and efficient.
“Amatola will have a presence right here in Grahamstown,” he said late Friday afternoon. “We want to be a lot more visible to the public.”
Nair said there would be a stores section on the premises. This meant equipment and consumables would not have to be ordered from Amatola’s head office in East London, speeding up reaction time to problems.
“Also, the team might get bigger as the projects get bigger. In addition to the permanent maintenance and project teams, there will be support staff from head office moving in and out,” Nair said.
Staff from the organisation’s human resources, IT, safety and metering divisions would be working from the premises from time to time.
He said water outages in the high-lying areas of the city – Miles Street and Joza – were because of low water levels in the reservoirs because of high demand.
Water was cut off in Constitution Street on Friday after a pipe burst.
The section of pipe was replaced and the water later restored, he said.
