Grahamstown will be treated to world-class entertainment when renowned performers Steve Newman and Lungi ‘Lu’ Dlamini perform on Saturday 8 March.
The jazz duo is currently touring across South Africa and will be playing at Hotel Victoria Mews’ The Old Vic bar at 8pm. Organiser of the event and member of local band The Fishwives, Strato Copteros says that this is a ground-breaking collaboration.
“Lu Dlamini is a sensational vocalist and Newman is a legendary acoustic guitarist in South Africa,” he said.
It is R70 at the door and the venue is open from 6pm onwards.
During the performance, the two will play together as well as separately. Following their performance, local band The Fishwives will play.
Owner of Hotel Victoria Mews, Anastasia Zacharellis said that she hoped people enjoy the performance. “I think people are starved for good music and so far these jazz and blues events have been very successful,” she said.
Newman is described as one of South Africa's most expressive guitarists and is a founding member of the popular band Tananas.
He has been playing for over 40 years across the world, with acts such as Tony Cox, Sting, Mondetta and The Aquarian Quartet. Dlamini has worked as a backing vocalist for artists like Jonas Gwangwa, Sipho 'Hotstix' Mabuse, Sankomota, Mango Groove and Brenda Fassie.
She performed in Brazil and Spain until 2002 before returning to South Africa and then began work on what was originally her solo album in 2010.
During the production of that album, she met Newman and the album became a collaboration.
The album Jika Nelanga or “Turning to the sun” was released in 2012 and features Greg Georgiades, Ashish Joshi and Godfrey Mcina.
