Near perfect sea conditions, with calm waters and 17 C greeted athletes as they started in waves from shortly before 7am to 8am.
The 1.5km sea swim was followed by a 90km cycle, ending with a 21km run.
Hot weather conditions greeted athletes as they began the cycle leg, before the rain came down and many were approaching the final stretch of the cycle.

South Africa's James Cunnama was overall winner, with his partner Jodie Swallow (Great Britain) winning the women's race.
Grahamstown's swimmer of the day was Deon Boshoff with a time of 32:11, while Johan Conradie enjoyed the cycling leg to record the fastest time by a local in 3:03:24.
The quickest local runner on the day was Walter Eksteen with his time of 2:02:00.
He was also the first Grahamstown athlete home in 5:59:24.
Megan Hobson, who moved to Grahamstown from Gauteng earlier this month was first woman home in 6:01:51.
